Many years ago I had a casual 10-minute lunch conversation that changed my life.
I was attending my first meeting as a member of a business coaching group. It was an assortment of several dozen business people from all kinds of industries, from all around the world. But I was worried because I had spent several thousand dollars to join. It was huge money and I confess, I was doubting the return on investment.
One of the speakers that morning captured my attention. Although he was a chiropractor by trade, he loved marketing. I was in the printing industry.
I stayed in the meeting room at lunch and noticed he was the only other person in the room. I sheepishly introduced myself and asked him about a price-increase problem I was having. It was related to his talk that morning.
He graciously gave me a few simple suggestions and a template to follow, scribbled on a napkin. By the time lunch was done, I had written a sales letter that generated over $50,000 in sales in the next few weeks. It solved a major problem of how to pass along a painful price increase to our clients, AND it generated that $50K in less than a month.
That single 10-minute conversation paid for a year's worth of coaching at least 7 times over. Talk about positive ROI from coaching!
I was now a true believer in the power of mentorship and coaching.

Sure, prior to that, I bought books and courses from the best business coaches out there. (I still do.) Books got me off to a great start.
But books and courses lack two things:
First, with books, there aren't any one-on-one conversations with coaches or colleagues in different industries. As a passive reader and consumer of content, everything is filtered through my own perspective and biases.
Conversations with others opens up new perspectives. It highlights things I miss on my own. Coaching conversations gave me moments of enlightenment I would never have gotten otherwise.
There’s a power when two or more minds get together that you simply can’t get when you’re brainstorming alone.
Second, there is no accountability in books or courses. Saying things out loud to a coach, agreeing to a plan, and being followed up with on that plan by your coach does wonders for getting things done!
In hindsight I would have hired a business coach years earlier.
Although our business began growing at a pretty good clip, there were still occasional periods in which I felt stuck and in need of business advice.
Sometimes I simply needed a new perspective. There were times where I felt I was drowning in a sea of marketing and sales tactics that didn’t seem to get us anywhere.
